Thursday, Oct 3 - Spotlight On Building Music Communities, Instead of a single guest, we are going to have three segments dealing with importance of local music scenes.
Shain Shapiro, thought leader and author of the book, This Must Be The Place: How Music Can Make Your City Better, talks about the intersection of music, culture and urban policy. Trumpeter and composer Thomas Marriott takes us through a modern history of the Seattle jazz scene, with all of its current challenges and opportunities, and we end with Seattle House Mafia, a three-member DJ collective who tell tales of the evolution of Seattle’s dance music scene. Monday, Oct 14 - Dancing About Architecture with Kerry Jones of Death Doula: As a young girl, Kerry Jones learned every word to the pop songs inspiring her and sang along to her favorites Janet Jackson, Chris Isaak, and Sade, getting trouble in school because she couldn't stop singing. Later, as she discovered other genres like industrial and grunge, she developed an obsession with The Cranberries, Nine Inch Nails, and Alice in Chains. Now with an established group in Portland, Oregon, her home of several years, Jones performs as Death Doula. Add to Calendar
Thursday, Oct 17 - Spotlight On Shawn Mativetsky, a pioneer in bridging the worlds of Western and Indian classical musics. Acclaimed as a gifted soloist and a leading disciple of the renowned Pandit Sharda Sahai, Mativetsky is highly sought-after as both performer and educator. He teaches tabla and percussion at McGill University, while remaining a prominent advocate of the tabla and North Indian classical music through lectures, workshops, and performances throughout Canada and abroad. Monday, Oct 21 - Dancing About Architecture with Lewis John Gill, a British Avant Garde Composer. He was born in Warrington, England in 1968 and still resides there. Gill's music has received praise from the american experimental guitarist Elliot Sharp, former King Crimson member Markus Reuter, former Enid member William Gilmour and the late German composer Karlheinz Stockhausen.
