Dancing About Architecture with Michael Sarian

Trumpeter and composer Michael Sarian was born in Toronto, raised in Buenos Aires, and lives in New York City. In addition to several records with his quartet, his discography includes free improvised duet recordings with pianist Matthew Putman, electronic avant-garde music with pianist Olec Mün, and several albums with his septet Michael Sarian & The Chabones - and he's recently been on tour with the Jonas Brothers, performing at over 100 sold out stadiums and arenas around the world.

Michael has a new album out September 13, 2024, Live at Cliff Bell's, on Shifting Paradigm Records. The record features a quartet of Michael (trumpet/flugelhorn), Santiago Leibson (piano), Marty Kenney (bass), and Nathan Ellman-Bell (drums).

Toronto-born, Buenos Aires-bred, and Brooklyn-based trumpeter Michael Sarian is set to release Live at Cliff Bell’s on September 13, 2024, via Shifting Paradigm Records. This album, Sarian’s third quartet outing, captures the raw energy of a live performance at the legendary Detroit venue.

The second single from the new album is "Living at the End of the World", which is also the title track from Michael and his quartet’s 2022 studio album, a song inspired by Japanese author Haruki Murakami’s 1985 novel Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World.

Spotlight On: What is your first memory of music?

Michael Sarian: When I was about five years old, my parents bought a piano for our home and I remember the movers bringing it into the house and being incredibly nice to me as I just stood around asking questions.

SO: What instrument(s) can you play?

MS: Trumpet/Flugelhorn, a bit of piano. I pretty much gave up trying to be proficient on other instruments as soon as I got to NYC and realized I wasn't going to have time to just 'dabble' and had to really focus on the trumpet.

SO: What song, album or artist never gets old for you?

MS: Miles.
